TreeBlock's GHG calculator (Greenhouse Gas) is the software that automates the calculation of carbon-dioxide-equivalent (CO₂e) emissions generated by your business activity. Compliant with the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1, it covers all three emission scopes (Scope 1 direct emissions, Scope 2 indirect emissions from purchased energy, Scope 3 indirect supply-chain emissions) and produces a GHG Inventory ready for sustainability reporting, customer questionnaires, ESG-linked banking requests and third-party verification.
What is the GHG Protocol and why is it the reference standard?
The GHG Protocol is the global standard for greenhouse-gas accounting of companies, products and cities. Developed by WRI and WBCSD, it is adopted by 92 percent of Fortune 500 companies and is the methodological basis of ISO 14064-1, ESRS E1, GRI 305 and CDP Climate Change.
It covers seven Kyoto/Doha greenhouse gases (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, HFC, PFC, SF₆, NF₃) expressed in CO₂-equivalent through the IPCC 100-year Global Warming Potential. The cornerstone methodological choice is the split into three Scopes that reflect the level of control over the emission source.
Scope 1, 2, 3: how to calculate them
Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources (fuels, refrigerants, processes). Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heat and cooling. Scope 3 covers 15 distinct categories of supply-chain emissions, from raw materials and business travel to product end-of-life. Total carbon footprint = Scope 1 + 2 + 3.
The base formula is: emission (kgCO₂e) = activity data (litres, kWh, km, kg) multiplied by the emission factor (kgCO₂e per unit). Emission factors come from IPCC, DEFRA / BEIS, AIB European Residual Mix and ISPRA. TreeBlock auto-updates factors on every official release.
Frequently asked questions on GHG calculation
- What is CO₂-equivalent (CO₂e)?
- CO₂-equivalent is the standardized unit used to express the climate impact of all greenhouse gases against a single reference (CO₂). It is calculated by multiplying the mass of the gas by its 100-year Global Warming Potential.
- What is the difference between Scope 1, 2 and 3?
- Scope 1: direct emissions from owned/controlled sources. Scope 2: indirect emissions from purchased energy. Scope 3: all other indirect emissions across 15 supply-chain categories, typically the largest in absolute terms.
- Which emission factors does TreeBlock use?
- TreeBlock uses IPCC AR6 for GWPs, DEFRA / UK Government for most operational categories, AIB European Residual Mix for market-based European electricity, Terna for location-based Italian electricity, and ISPRA for Italy-specific factors. All factor versions are recorded in the audit trail.
- How long does the first GHG calculation take?
- For an SME with average data quality, first Scope 1+2 typically takes 20-40 hours with TreeBlock. Scope 3 (15 categories) can take 40-80 hours in year one, reduced to 10-20 in subsequent years thanks to baseline reuse.
